Cataloged from PDF version of thesis. Includes bibliographical references (pages 26-27). Cardiovascular development is a complex process that involves the coordinated action of multiple genes and environmental factors. Epigenetic regulation refers to changes in gene expression without alterations in the underlying DNA sequence and one of the crucial environmental factors affecting cardiovascular development. Epigenetic regulation regulates many aspects of gene expression, including promoter activity, transcriptional efficiency, and post-transcriptional modifications. DNA methylation is one of the most common epigenetic regulatory mechanisms and has shown to play a significant role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. DNA methylation is the addition of a methyl group to the DNA backbone, and it is mainly carried out by the enzymes DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs).To better understand the mechanisms behind the development of such diseases, it is essential to understand the interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Epigenetic modifications can have a wide range of effects on the behavior and function of cells Nafisa Alam Srity B.
