Amla (Emblica officinalis or Phyllanthus emblica Linn.) is one of the vital medicinal plants belong to Euphorbiaceae family and it is used as an important herbal drug. Abundance and easy availability make this plant a promising source for potential therapeutic agents. The main purpose of this review was to compile information on therapeutic potential of the crude extracts and the phytochemicals isolated from Amla by the researchers. The compounds that are found in Amla include Vitamin-C, tannoids, ellagic acid, tannins, phyllembelic acid, phyllembelin, rutin, curcum-inoids, emblicol, some phenolic compounds etc. These compounds are found to show significant activity as an anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti diabetic, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-pyretic, anti-microbial, hepatoprotective, nephoprotective, anti-diarrheal and antitussive agents. This plant is enriched with vitamin C, amino acid and thus, it is highly nutritious. The information was collected from various authentic scientific journals and renowned databases.
