Open Access Week 2023

Ayesha Abed Library, BRAC University in collaboration with the Open Society Network (OSUN), celebrated Open Access Week 2023 from October 27 to November 4, to recognize and promote open access to scholarly research and educational resources. The aim of this Open Access Week 2023 was to promote open access principles, encourage faculty, researchers, and students to make their work openly available, and raise awareness on the benefits of open access in advancing research at BRAC University. This year, the theme of International Open Access Week was "Community over Commercialization." The Ayesha Abed Library organized a series of activities to celebrate Open Access Week 2023, which included a webinar titled 'Exploring the Impact of Open Access Publishing on Research Visibility and Scholarly Communication' conducted by Dr. Nitin Ghoshal from Elsevier. One of the highlights of the celebration was "Open Access Publication Award" for faculty and students.

Dr Nitin Ghoshal, PhD

Customer Consultant

Dr Nitin Ghoshal is presently working as a Customer Consultant at Elsevier. He is a PhD in Radiation Biology from the Dept of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics, North- Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya and gained further experience through Research Associateship in Heavy-ion Radiation Biology from Inter-University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi. He has 5 international publications in his credit. He has also upgraded his skills by acquiring MBA in Operations Management and is Six Sigma Black Belt Certified In his previous assignments he has an experience of 6 years in the diagnostic portfolio of Bio- Rad Laboratories as an Application Specialist, Pan-India Technical Support; and 2 years as a Medical Affairs Manager in BD, Pre-Analytical Systems.

- A presentation will be delivered by the University Librarian, Hasina Afroz on the topic of Open access initiatives at Brac University Library.
- OA Publication Award for Students and faculties.
- Award will be presented by Prof. Syed Mahfuzul Aziz, PhD, Pro Vice-Chancellor & Acting Vice-Chancellor BRAC University
- Dr Laura J Reichenbach, Dean of James P. Grant School of Public Health (JPGSPH) will attend this event as a special-guest
OA Publication Award for Students

Objective: Recognizing students who have contributed to BRAC University's Institutional Repository by submitting their publications such as theses or internship reports as part of their graduation and have received high viewership.

Award Criteria:
  • Three awards will be granted for the topmost viewed items in BRAC University's Institutional Repository, including one for a postgraduate student, one for an undergraduate student, and one for the topmost viewed internship report.
  • Eligible publications are limited to those published or uploaded into BRAC University's Institutional Repository in 2022.
OA Publication Award for Faculty

Objective: Recognizing faculty members who have actively promoted open access to their scholarly work through publishers.

Source of Information: Data will be collected from Scopus https://www.scopus.com/

Award Criteria:
  • The award will be given to the BRAC University faculty member with the highest number of citations for an open access article published in the last three years in Scopus.
  • The award will be granted to the most highly cited open access publication in Scopus.
  • Eligible publications are limited to those published between 2021 and September 2023 in Scopus-indexed open access journals.
  • The award is exclusively for faculty members and is not applicable to Adjunct Professors, or Honorary Faculty.
  • The same paper is not eligible to receive the award more than once.
  • An individual faculty member can receive the award a maximum of two times.
